Escalating crisis in Yemen: How you can help

Escalating violence that began in September 2026 across Yemen’s West Coast and southern Taiz is putting more people at risk and driving urgent humanitarian needs. 

“After more than a decade of conflict, families in Yemen should not have to keep running in search of safety. They deserve more than the endless cycle of fleeing and trying to survive,” said Laila Al Amine, Prosper Global Regional Programs Director. “They deserve the chance to recover, rebuild and shape their own futures without fear of being uprooted again.” 

As fighting intensifies, more people are being forced from their homes, while damaged roads and communication networks make it harder to reach them.  

More than 82,000 have been displaced since the beginning of September alone, including nearly 56,000 displaced in Taiz. Some families are being displaced for the second or third time after 12 years of conflict. Many have exhausted their resources and are fleeing with very little.  

What do communities in Yemen need during this crisis?

This new wave of displacement comes as hunger is already worsening across Yemen. People need food, safe shelter, clean water, healthcare, protection, and money to purchase essentials. 

Millions are struggling to put food on the table after years of conflict and economic hardship, while disruptions to imported food and rising fuel and transportation costs are making it even harder for families to afford what they need.  

Families have fled rural and frontline areas for safer districts, including Al-Masrakh, Al-Qaherah and Salah. Many are arriving with little more than what they can carry and without enough food, safe shelter, or money to meet their most immediate needs. The communities welcoming displaced families are also feeling the strain as more people arrive and resources are stretched. 

Aid supplies were already running low before the latest escalation. Recent crises, including flooding, have depleted emergency stocks just as the number of people needing help is rising rapidly. 

How is Prosper Global responding?

In Al-Qaherah, Prosper Global teams are already supporting families displaced or affected by the conflict. In coordination with local partners, we are delivering emergency cash assistance in Taiz to help families meet their most urgent needs. 

“Cash gives people something displacement takes away: choice. It allows families to decide what they need most, whether that is food, shelter or medicine,” said Laila. “But the needs are growing exponentially by the day and may quickly outpace available resources.”  

Prosper Global, formerly Mercy Corps, has worked in Yemen since 2010, providing lifesaving assistance while helping communities recover and build resilience to future challenges.
